Why does the playground need to be replaced?
Our current playground is aging and has been assessed as being beyond its projected life expectancy. Repairs have become increasingly expensive, and replacement parts are difficult to source. The current playground is scheduled for demolition in July 2027, and we’re raising funds so a brand-new playground can open in its place for the 2027–2028 school year.
Why does a playground cost $425,000?
The budget covers far more than equipment: the Blue Imp composite structure ($180,000), Dream Weaver ($40,000), swings, spinner and Wave Catchers ($40,000), benches and signage ($8,000), freight ($3,000), site prep and excavation ($18,000), assembly and installation ($50,000), gravel supply and install ($38,000), perimeter wood borders and landscaping ($28,000), and GST ($20,000). The demolition of the old structure is covered by the CBE under our 2025 agreement. Full line items are in the sponsorship package.
Will I get a tax receipt?
Yes. We partner with Parks Foundation Calgary and its Gift Administration Program: every donation of $25 or more receives an official tax receipt — issued immediately for online donations and within 6 weeks for offline donations. Parks Foundation Calgary charges no administration fee, so 100% of your donation goes to the playground.
Who is running this fundraiser?
The W.O. Mitchell Playground Committee — volunteer parents of the W.O.M. School Society (WOMSS), working with the school council and administration. Donations are administered by Parks Foundation Calgary, a civic partner and qualified donee.
When will the new playground be built?
The current playground is scheduled for demolition in July 2027, and the new playground is anticipated to be completed over the summer — open in time for the 2027–2028 school year in September 2027.
Who is building the new playground?
After a competitive bid among three design-and-build proposals, we selected Alberta-based BDI Play Designs, supplying Blue Imp commercial playground equipment manufactured in Medicine Hat, AB — keeping design, manufacturing, distribution and installation within Alberta.
Are you applying for grants too?
Yes — we’ve already received a $100,000 CFEP grant from the Government of Alberta, and our Calgary Parks Grant application is pending approval. Community donations help demonstrate local support for these applications.
Can my business donate a prize or services instead of money?
Absolutely! Gift cards, products, services and experiences make fantastic prizes for our raffles and silent auction, and in-kind support is recognized alongside our sponsors. Please contact us to discuss.
How can I help if I can't donate?
Save your refundables for our bottle drives, do your Christmas shopping at our silent auction, share this site or the sponsorship package with your employer, or volunteer at events. Get in touch — we’ll find a spot for you.
